The twin towns of Dongara and Port Denison are separated by the Irwin River and located in the Shire of Irwin.
The Wattandee tribe called Dongara a place where Australian Sea Lions meet. Dhunga or Thunga meaning Australian Sea Lions and ‘Arra’ for a place. Wattandee is the Tribe and Totem, which is the Kanyongoo spirit of Wathoo/Thunga (Snake).
